Nutrition, one of the basic needs to survive, is especially critical for individuals in poverty. Based on the Economic Research Service provided by the USDA, in 2006 36.3% of the households below national poverty lines experienced food insecurities [1]. The definition given by the ERS for a household with food insecurity is a household that does not have access to enough food for an active and healthy live. Community Action provides food pantries and emergency food for households experiencing food insecurities. If elgible, outreach workers will also assist individuals to apply for foodstamps.
Even with enough money to put food on the table, households may lack balanced, safe, nutritional meals. To help with such, Commmunity Action provides educational programs about meal preparation and nutrition. We operate programs like Meals On Wheels, summer feeding programs and help supplement through garden seed programs. We also provide assistance to our Senior Citizens to receive balanced diets.
